Something Special lies right beside the entrance of the marina. The dive is not about the reef but about the sand flat in front of it: a field of garden eels that vanish into the sand as you approach, and tarpon hunting along the harbour mouth after dark. An easy dive with a character of its own.
Something Special is a beginner shore dive in Kralendijk: sand flat with garden eels at eight to twelve metres, reef to thirty metres and tarpon at the harbour mouth at dusk.
From the entry a broad sand flat at eight to twelve metres with hundreds of garden eels and lionfish hunting at its edge. Behind it a reef top with sponges and finger coral dropping to thirty metres. Tarpon hang by the harbour mouth, especially at dusk.
At dusk and after dark, when the tarpon become active. By day the visibility above the sand flat varies with boat traffic and wind.
Boat traffic at the harbour mouth: stay on the reef side and dive with a buoy. The sand stirs up quickly and visibility can halve within an hour. Parking is on marina grounds. No shade at the entry.
Decisions on diveability, technique and health belong with STINAPA, a dive school or a doctor. This page only describes the conditions.
The site owes its name to the contrast with the rest of the coast: no wall, no reef top, but sand. Dive schools have used it for navigation exercises for years, because the sand flat offers few reference points.
