Kralendijk is Bonaire's capital — though it feels more like a village than a city. Pastel Dutch merchant houses, a coastline of emerald-green water, a handful of squares and a main street you can walk in an hour. No skyscrapers, no traffic jams, no crowds. And that's exactly the charm. Kralendijk is the kind of capital where you pick up a croissant at the bakery in the morning, test dive gear at a dive shop after, and watch the sun sink behind Klein Bonaire from a seaside terrace in the late afternoon.
The 12 key places in Kralendijk
1. Wilhelminaplein
Kralendijk's central square, named after Queen Wilhelmina. Around it: pastel-blue and yellow colonial houses, the Cultural Centre, and some of the island's oldest cafés. A good place to start your explorations.
2. Fort Oranje
A small 17th-century fort that guarded the harbour against pirates and British attacks. Today the orange-yellow lighthouse still stands — the most photographed spot in Kralendijk. Free to access; the view over the bay from the wall is beautiful.
3. Karel's Beach Bar / Karel's Pier
An iconic pier reaching into the sea, with a round bar at the end. At sunset, the most atmospheric terrace on Bonaire — grab a Polar or a rum punch and watch the sun go down. Sometimes live music.
4. Cruise Terminal
On cruise days a large ship berths here. The terminal itself is modest, but the waterfront alongside has taxi ranks, market stalls and a lovely walk along the water.
5. Kaya Grandi (the main street)
Bonaire's shopping street. Here you'll find the best dive shops (Dive Friends, Carib Inn, Wannadive), a few art galleries, jewellers and local boutiques. Dollar and euro are both accepted, though nearly everyone prices in dollars.
6. Plaza Reina Wilhelmina
The seaside promenade with the queen's name in mosaic. Fishing boats moor here in the evening, and you can sit on the wall looking towards Klein Bonaire. The starting point for many sunset walks.
7. Terramar Museum
A small archaeological museum telling Bonaire's history — from the Caquetío people, through the Spanish and Dutch colonies, to modern Bonaire. €10 entry, an hour is enough. A good rainy-day option (rain is rare, but you never know).
8. Pasa Bon Pizza / It Rains Fishes / Capriccio
The three restaurants that appear in every guide. Pasa Bon (pizza by the beach), It Rains Fishes (fish on the waterfront), Capriccio (Italian in a colonial house). Reserve all three in high season.
9. Bonaire Marine Park Headquarters
The STINAPA office, where you can get your Nature Tag and information on dive sites, snorkel spots and park rules. Friendly staff, good maps.
10. Donkere Steeg / Cuba Compagnie
A picturesque passage with colourful murals. An Instagram favourite. Walk through and you come out on a terrace street with a few smaller local eateries.
11. Eden Beach (just outside the centre)
Walking distance or a short drive south of Kralendijk. A beach with palm trees, the Spice Beach Club, and a snorkel reef straight off the beach. Popular for lazy beach days.
12. Wannadive Sunset Pier
Just outside the centre on the south coast — a pier where divers and snorkelers set out. At sunset less busy than Karel's, often with an even better view.
Walking route: Kralendijk in 2 hours
Start at Wilhelminaplein → Fort Oranje (lighthouse) → Plaza Reina Wilhelmina (promenade) → Karel's Pier (a drink) → Kaya Grandi (shopping street) → Terramar Museum → back towards the waterfront for sunset. Good coffee on the way: Bagels & Bloom or Joe's Grill House.

- Money: the dollar is the standard currency. Euro is often accepted, usually at 1:1 (not always favourable).
