Renting a Car on Bonaire: What to Choose and What It Costs

📅 2026-08-06 ⏱️ 5 min read ✍️ Bonairian

On Bonaire your own vehicle is all but essential. Public transport is virtually non-existent, taxis are expensive, and most of the best places — dive sites, Washington Slagbaai, beaches — are spread across the island. So the question isn't whether to rent a car, but which. Pickup truck or ordinary car? This guide gives you an honest answer.

Pickup truck or ordinary car?

For most visitors — divers especially — a pickup truck (often a Mahindra or Toyota) is the standard. Advantages:

Downsides: things in the bed aren't secure. Don't leave valuables behind.

Ordinary car / sedan

Cheaper, better air-con, easier parking, a secure boot.

4WD / Jeep

Mainly for those who want to drive the long route in Washington Slagbaai NP, or the tracks after rain. It costs more but gives freedom of movement.

The best rental companies

Tip: local companies are often cheaper and more flexible than the international chains. Do reserve ahead — especially in high season.

What does it cost?

Insurance: pay attention

This is where it works differently from home. On Bonaire, rental car insurance is often not automatically all-inclusive. Read the policy carefully:

Many travel insurances or credit cards offer car-rental cover. Check what's already covered — sometimes you don't need to buy anything extra.

Road rules and roads

What's different from home?

Don't forget

Parking

Free almost everywhere. No parking meters in Kralendijk. At dive sites along the yellow stones, parking is fine — don't leave valuables visible in the car. At restaurants and shops there's usually plenty of space.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need an international driving licence on Bonaire?

No. Bonaire is a special municipality of the Netherlands — a Dutch licence is enough. For other nationalities, a national licence together with a passport is often accepted, but check with the rental company beforehand.

Pickup truck or ordinary car?

For divers/snorkelers: a pickup truck (a bed for gear). For culture and beach tourism: an ordinary car is fine. For the long route in Washington Park: 4WD recommended.

How much does a rental car on Bonaire cost?

Sedan from ~$35/day, pickup from ~$40/day, 4WD from ~$60/day. Weekly rates are a little better. Budget +$10–15/day for full insurance.

What is the excess on car rental?

Often $500–1500 without extra insurance. Tyres and underbody are often excluded. Additional cover is strongly recommended, especially if you drive rural.

Can I drive at night on Bonaire?

Yes, but be careful. Many roads are unlit, and donkeys/goats/chickens can cross suddenly. Avoid Washington Slagbaai and the northern coast road after sunset.
