Windsurfing on Bonaire at Lac Bay

📅 2026-08-06 ⏱️ 5 min read ✍️ Bonairian

Lac Bay on Bonaire's south-east coast is world-famous among windsurfers. A shallow, protected lagoon of about 8 square kilometres, knee-deep water, constantly warm, and an almost year-round reliable trade wind of 15–25 knots. No wonder pros like Bjorn Dunkerbeck and Tonky Frans grew up or train here. But Lac Bay isn't just for pros — it is also one of the world's best places to learn. This guide covers everything you need to know.

Why Lac Bay is so special

The lagoon is protected on the ocean side by a reef belt, so there are no waves. The water is shallow — often less than a metre deep — which means if you fall, you simply stand up. For beginners that is priceless. For advanced surfers too: you can carve at high speed without worrying about chop.

The wind almost always comes from the east (trade wind) and is constant — no sudden gusts or lulls. Between 11:00 and 17:00 there is usually enough wind to sail.
