Buddy's Reef is a house reef with a jetty, making it one of the easiest places on the island to dive at night. By day it is an ordinary, calm dive; after sunset the reef comes to life with squid, lobster and hunting moray.
Buddy's Reef is a beginner shore dive at Kralendijk: entry by the jetty, a reef top at five to seven metres and a slope to thirty, much used as a night dive.
Under the jetty, sand with garden eels, then a reef top at five to seven metres with finger coral and sponges. The slope runs to thirty metres. At night squid, octopus and glassy sweepers; by day schools of grunts and parrotfish.
After sunset, when the site is at its best. By day it is a fine check-out dive, with the jetty as a fixed reference point.
Busy around the dive-school hours and visibly frequented: the shallow part is not pristine. The jetty is slippery with wet fins. Facilities belong to the resort.
Decisions on diveability, technique and health belong with STINAPA, a dive school or a doctor. This page only describes the conditions.
The jetties along this coast make the difference between a night dive with and without a reference point; it is the main reason these house reefs log so many more night dives than the free entries just along the coast.
