Salt City is the fourth double reef of the south coast and the least known. The sand flat between inner and outer reef is at its broadest here, which makes the crossing long and the chance of rays and tarpon high.
Salt City is an advanced shore dive on the south coast: an inner reef at six to nine metres, a broad sand flat at twelve to fifteen metres and an outer reef to thirty-eight metres.
The inner reef at six to nine metres with finger coral and sponges, behind it a broad sand flat at twelve to fifteen metres. On the sand, stingrays, eagle rays and hunting tarpon. The outer reef drops from twenty to thirty-eight metres with large sponges.
In light current and good visibility, as the first dive of the day. Plan the crossing on air and time, not on feel.
The sand flat is broad: the crossing costs more than at Angel City and offers few reference points. In stirred-up sand you can miss the outer reef. Unpaved parking, no facilities.
Decisions on diveability, technique and health belong with STINAPA, a dive school or a doctor. This page only describes the conditions.
The name refers to the salt pans behind the coast road; the area has been industrial ground since the nineteenth century and protected underwater area since 1979. The two lie a few hundred metres apart here.
