Yellowman

Yellow tube sponges on the top gave the site its name

Yellowman is named after the yellow tube sponges that stand on the reef top, striking among the mostly purple and orange of the rest. The dive is easy: shallow, lightly flowing and close to the boat.

IN ONE LINE

Yellowman is a beginner boat dive on Klein Bonaire: a reef top at four to six metres with yellow tube sponges and a calm slope to thirty metres.

TRANSLATED PAGEYellowman

What you see

A top at four to six metres with yellow tube sponges among finger coral and fan coral. The slope runs gently to thirty metres. Schools of juvenile fish on the top, and cleaner shrimp in the sponges.

When to go

In calm sea, as a first or second dive of a boat day. Around midday the sponge colours come out best.

WHAT DISAPPOINTS

Little depth and little relief. Sponges are fragile: keep your fins and camera clear. Boat only, no facilities.

Context

Tube sponges filter water constantly and grow slowly; a colony a metre high is decades old. They break off easily on contact and do not grow back in the same place.
